Eco Fabrics

Brentano adheres to a strict green criteria when developing many of our fabrics, with a focus on sustainable products and environmentally friendly processes. Our eco-friendly fabrics include our wide variety of vegan/faux leathers including silicone products, as well as stunning upholstery and drapery options. Brentano’s eco-friendly fabrics display an uncommonly broad selection of textiles that prove focusing on sustainable products doesn’t have to result in any level of compromise as regards style, hand or performance.

ECO-FABRICS : recycled content

Brentano offers a variety of fabrics using recycled fiber content, including recycled cotton, nylon, and polyester. Use of recycled fibers reduces waste destined for landfills and also preserves resources such as oil and energy needed to manufacture new materials. Recycled fabrics from Brentano include blends of various recycled fibers as well as several 100% post consumer recycled polyester textiles. One source of post consumer polyester is recycled soda and water bottles that otherwise may have ended up as waste. Our recycled polyester fabric is fully recyclable, and is never intended to reach the landfill.

ECO-FABRICS : faux leather

Brentano’s polyurethane faux leathers were developed as greener, more eco-friendly alternatives to extremely toxic, dioxin-releasing PVC (vinyl) and the chemical-laden production of leather. Click on the following topics to read more about the environmental benefits of polyurethane:
The life cycle of polyurethane can be specifically designed for the interior design textile industry. By using standard leather tests on our eco-friendly faux leathers, Brentano is able to tailor a fabric’s life length to specific applications such as outdoor, upholstery, and ultra friendly polyurethane textiles. The majority of our polyurethane faux leathers use a polymer resin that is degradable. At Brentano, we choose our manufacturers carefully, seeking out mills that are conscientious of the green movement and have clear environmental goals. For example, one manufacturer has reduced its use of solvents by using a distillation tower to reuse and recapture the same solvents. All of the manufacturers we use for our polyurethane textiles are either ISO 14001 certified or compliant with local pollution protection laws, and the pigments and chemicals used in their facilities comply with REACH guidelines.
Polyurethane is a greener alternative to PVC (vinyl) and leather. Naturally soft and flexible, polyurethane does not require the solvents used to soften PVC and leather in the manufacturing process. PVC contains chloride, does not degrade, leaches toxic additives in landfills, and emits carcinogenic dioxin when incinerated. Similarly, leather production is a chemical-laden process involving heavy metals, with its waste linked to water pollution. Comparatively, polyurethane is much more environmentally friendly. Our eco-friendly faux leathers are a part of our Brentano Green label, along with recycled polyester, eco wool, bamboo, and organic cotton textiles. Within the Brentano Green label, our ultra friendly series of polyurethanes and faux leathers uses the fewest solvents and the least energy. Polyurethane-based faux leather is also an animal friendly alternative to natural leather.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) explains volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as gases emitted from certain solids or liquids. They include a variety of chemicals which may have short and long-term negative health effects. All of the faux leathers in Brentano’s leather and ultra friendly categories satisfy the VOC emissions requirements for California Section 01350 — a small-scale chamber test which evaluates materials for toxic chemicals, including VOC emissions. Future testing will include the hand category.

ECO-FABRICS : third-party certified

Brentano offers a variety of fabrics with third-party certifications. These include MBDC Cradle to Cradle, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and Facts. Developed by the textile industry for textiles, the Facts program recognizes textiles that have been evaluated with the multi-attribute sustainability standard NSF/ANSI 336 by an independent third-party certification body authorized by the Association for Contract Textiles.

Raw Material

To satisfy the raw material requirement, the textile must either incorporate recycled materials or degradable fibers. If the raw material is a naturally grown fiber, it must be a rapidly renewable resource and grown without or with minimal harmful pesticides, chemicals, and fertilizers.

The Process

The process takes into account the environmental aspects of manufacturing a textile as well as the entire series of actions required to produce it. No part of the process - from dying and spinning the yarn to weaving and finishing the fabric - can involve harmful chemicals. The manufacturing facility must also comply with environmental protection laws governing energy conservation, water treatment, and chemical regulation.

Facility and Social Responsibility

Facility and social responsibility consider working conditions, public health, and implementation of green programs. Manufacturers must comply with fundamental human rights laws and initiate programs to promote the green movement. Such initiatives include utilizing energy saving and air quality improvement devices, supporting recycling programs, and encouraging green consciousness among employees.

Brentano recognizes the following global third-party verifications from the textile industry as accreditation for the above criteria for green fabrics:
