Fabric Care General Tips
Regular maintenance reduces soil build up on a fabric’s surface through routine, continuous care. Maintenance includes habitual and careful vacuuming, periodic cleaning of all parts such as arm covers and headrests, turning and rotating cushions and prompt treatment of spots and stains. Brentano recommends a professional cleaning service to aid in maintenance.
Pretest
Before cleaning any fabric, first perform a pretest in a small, hidden area.
- To avoid spreading the stain or shrinking the fabric, use only a small amount of cleaner applied with a dampened towel.
-
Work from the outer edge of the stain into the center.
-
Do not rub the stain as you may damage the fabric. Carefully blot the cleaning agent.
-
Upon stain removal with the cleaning agent, rinse the fabric and blot it dry with an absorbent cloth or sponge.
-
Allow the fabric to dry completely and check for color change and shrinkage. It may take several tests of cleaning agents before finding one that does not change the fabric’s color or cause it to shrink.

Cleaning Sheers and Drapery
A reputable dry cleaner that specializes in home furnishings is always recommended for sheers and draperies. Few fabrics are completely stable. Fabrics breathe and absorb moisture, resulting in stretching or shrinking. It is reasonable to allow some natural fibers as much as a 3% change in length. When selecting a dry cleaner, make sure that they perform a blocking on the sheers and draperies after cleaning and pressing to ensure that the fabric retains its original length. Follow the same cleaning codes as Upholstery.
Cleaning Polyurethane and Non-Woven
Both Water and Solvent methods can be used for face surface cleaning on polyurethane products. When cleaning water-based stains, use a solution of water and either soap, vinegar or a mild household cleaner such as Windex. If the stain persists, or if you are trying to clean a more difficult stain such as oil or ink, try using solvents such as mineral spirits, 50% diluted bleach or Naphtha.

Spot cleaning
Use soap and water to spot clean any area that is soiled. Rinse out the soap completely. A cool iron may be used for pressing.
